NUREMBERG (GERMANY), 17 (DPA/EP)
The Government of Germany has included Syria within the mechanism that favors the return of refugees, in such a way that Syrians who want to return to their country can receive financial aid from the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF, for its acronym in Spanish). German).
Germany currently hosts some 975,000 citizens of Syrian origin, mostly refugees who fled the civil war that broke out in 2011, according to statistics from the Ministry of the Interior. The conflict had left Syria outside the REAG/GARP 2.0 program, intended to encourage voluntary returns.
A spokesperson for the BAMF has confirmed that since February 13 it has also supported returns to Syria, with aid that can reach 1,000 euros individually or 4,000 in the case of entire families. The money is intended to finance the trip and also promote “reintegration.”
The fall of Bashar al Assad’s regime in December has revived the debate in Germany and other countries about the future of refugees, although the UN has called for caution not to force any type of return, emphasizing that Syria continues to have an uncertain future and suffers serious humanitarian shortcomings.
