Germany calls for a strong UN condemnation of the Russian annexation of Ukrainian territories

BERLIN, Oct. 7 (DPA/EP) –

The German Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock, has called on the United Nations to strongly condemn the Russian annexation of the Ukrainian regions of Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia.

Speaking to the media after meeting with his Pakistani counterpart, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Baerbock lamented that, after Moscow’s decision to annex these Ukrainian territories, the world has become more insecure.

“No one can question the sovereignty of a country, least of all by force,” said Baerbock, who has asked “to make it clear to Russia” that these four regions “belong to Ukraine.”

For his part, Zardari has not commented on whether Pakistan would support this hypothetical UN resolution, and has pointed out that Islamabad’s position should be discussed within the Pakistani Executive.

Already in March, Pakistan abstained from voting in favor of a resolution condemning the Russian invasion of Ukraine within the framework of an emergency session of the United Nations General Assembly.

However, Baerbock and Zardari have agreed to denounce the recent threats by Russian President Vladimir Putin about the possible use of nuclear weapons.

In this sense, the German minister has branded these statements as irresponsible, while the Pakistani diplomatic representative has argued that nuclear weapons should never be an option.
