You read it right, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) believed it had the most refined algorithm for detecting people and after several tests, sailors were asked to try to outwit artificial intelligence.
To do this, they carried out a field test and placed the robot in the middle of a roundabout. The mission was then for the sailors to try to approach the robot without being detected and whoever succeeded, won. All this is exposed in the book of defense expert Paul Scharre Four Battlegrounds: Power in the Age of Artificial Intelligence (via Twitter), which will debut on February 23 and in which he touches on the battle to control artificial intelligence.
Despite the trust that the managers had in the algorithm, some sailors managed to fool the robot. A couple managed to do it by running 300 meters doing somersaults, another managed to do it by disguising himself as a tree, but the most interesting technique was the one used by 2 soldiers, who got into a cardboard box and simply walked up to the robot without being detected.
“You could hear them laughing all the time,” said Phil, who was in charge of the experiment.

The boxes fooled artificial intelligence
Although the author of the book likened this scenario to something typical of Bugs Bunny in a cartoon from looney toonsplayers will undoubtedly be able to find the similarity rather with Snake and Raiden from Metal Gear.
While this is fascinating, it’s important to remember that the peculiar infiltration techniques worked against a robot, something that would hardly have been possible if the enemy were human.
“So these simple tricks, which a human would have easily figured out, are enough to break the algorithm,” Scharre added.
