Fire in the natural park of Argentine Patagonia advances and has already destroyed more than 3,000 hectares

The forest fire that began almost three weeks ago in the Nahuel Huapi National Park, one of the most beautiful reserves in Argentine Patagonia, is advancing due to the topographical and climatological difficulties that the brigade members have encountered and has already consumed more than 3,000 hectares. .

Nelson Leal, deputy head of the Forest Fire Prevention and Fighting Service of the city of Bariloche, told the media on Monday that the flames consume dense vegetation in areas that are very difficult to access.

“There is no way to access it with vehicles, the only entry is with helicopters,” described Leal.

The Nahuel Huapi National Park, with about 710,000 hectares, is located in the Lakes district and is close to the border with Chile. It is known for Nahuel Huapi, a lake of glacial origin. It extends between the southern provinces of Neuquén and Río Negro, contains towns such as Traful and is a neighbor of tourist cities such as San Carlos de Bariloche.

The entry the day before of a cold front with strong gusts of wind caused the rekindling of the fire, which generates large columns of smoke in the Cerro Colorado area, which are visible from several distant points, said a report from the emergency committee, coordinated by the Nahuel Huapi National Park and the Directorate of Fighting Forest Fires and Emergencies.

The 70-kilometer gusts prevented brigade members from entering the fire area.

The region that causes the most concern is Cascada Los Alerces, where a team from the emergency committee remains with residents monitoring the behavior of the fire.

For now, its advance remains under control in the most tourist areas.

The cause of the fire is unknown, although there is a suspicion that it may have been caused by electrical activity, such as lightning.
