“The PP will give him a voice [a los españoles] in the face of egocentrism, abandonment and censorship. And that voice will be stronger if we unite at the polls. It is always so: The union of the vote multiplies the seats; the division of the vote, subtracts seats“This is how he appealed this Thursday Alberto Núñez Feijóo to the vote useful for his party, which in just three days will face the polls in Catalonia with a clear objective: to materialize the ‘sorpasso’ of Vox.
He did so in Barcelona, where he presented the PP candidacy for the European elections on June 9 in an event in which he was escorted by Manfred Weberleader of the European People’s Party (EPP); Dolors Montserrat, head of the list in the European elections and director of the Catalan campaign; and Alejandro Fernandezpopular candidate for the Generalitat of Catalonia. “What Europe needs to improve, we have to take it to the polls”Feijóo has insisted on a hybrid electoral event, in a Catalan and European key, where he has taken the opportunity to lash out against the Government and the independence movement, an inseparable tandem in the eyes of the PP.
“There is no good separatism: in its different forms, it always brings poverty and division”Feijóo pointed out. The PP leader has also taken advantage of the argument that the EPP recently approved in Bucharest to extrapolate it to the situation in Catalonia. An ideology that fits Feijóo like a glovegiven the capital importance that the PP is giving to the immigration control and security in the last stages of the campaign to dispute the vote one on one for the formation he leads Santiago Abascal.
For this reason, the leader of the PP has asked for a “Europe that defends and protects the nations that make it up,” “to protect itself against insecurity and threats” and “to address problems head-on, starting with its borders.” Furthermore, he has also brought out the other great beam with which the popular European family will try to stop the rise of Group of European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR, for its acronym in English), to which Vox belongs, in the European Parliament: the defense of the countryside and farmers.
“Vox has arrived strong”
It was his own Alberto Núñez Feijóo who verbalized this Wednesday for the first time what the objective of the PP is in the Catalan elections next Sunday. “I am convinced that we are going to become the fourth force in Catalonia“, he explained. “From the ninth, to the fourth,” he illustrated how his formation would be on the Parliament’s grid if he fulfilled his aspirations. Knowing that the first positions will be for PSC, Junts and ERC, the PP leader’s statement leaves the ball in the court Alejandro Fernandez. A candidate revalidated “by a miracle” – in the words of a bishop from Genoa – and from whom only one thing is asked: to be ahead of Vox.
The truth is that the tracking newspapers managed by the party continue to reflect an advantageous position. The PP that, yes, waits “quadruple” its result in Catalonia after hitting the bottom in February 2021, when it was on the brink of disappearance in the Parliament, winning only three deputies. “The PP has returned to Catalonia”Feijóo celebrated in the forum of the economic newspaper Expansion. However, the truth is that the margin has narrowed in recent days, and that the fear of not consolidating the surprise to the formation of Santiago Abascal –with 11 deputies last term– stalks the seams of different sectors of the party.
“Vox has come strong at the end”sources from the Catalan PP acknowledge in conversation with this newspaper, although convinced that Fernández will surpass “both in votes and seats” Ignacio Garriga, general secretary and Vox candidate. In the opinion of a national deputy, that is why “nerves arise” the campaign has already entered into Cesarini area. For the PP, security and immigration control – to which Feijóo himself appealed again this Thursday in Barcelona – mean “the great element of mobilization”, the fact that can “make people not stay at home on Sunday”, in the words of a PP strategist. The problem is so in vogue in Catalonia that it is the cause that explains the foreseeable irruption in the Parliament of Catalan Alliancethe pro-independence and xenophobic party led by Silvia Orriols, mayor of Ripoll (Gerona).
