Faculties of Sciences and Engineering Sciences promote research and collaborative projects

With the participation of academics, researchers and postgraduate students from the Faculties of Science and Engineering Sciences of the Austral University of Chile, the first Exploratory Conference on Innovation and Development in Science and Technologyorganized within the framework of a collaboration agreement between the Ci2030 and InnovING2030 projects.

The activity, which brought together members of both faculties, had the objective of socializing and identifying possible complementary lines of research between the units, which allow interdisciplinary collaboration for the development of innovation projects in engineering and science. For this, the academics visited the different laboratories, both of the Faculty of Sciences and the Faculty of Engineering Sciences, to learn about and encourage interdisciplinary research.

Dr. Enrique Suárez, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Sciences, pointed out that these conferences represent “the beginning of something that has been worked on for some months and we hope that it will bear the fruit of stimulating researchers from both faculties, to that those ideas that are innovative and collaborative find a way, also integrating undergraduate and postgraduate students”.

Dr. Suárez also specified that through collaborative work solutions can be proposed “that are more integrated and that could be much more complex, where these two important areas of our University put at the service of our society and the socio-productive environment the installed capacities, where not only the addition is made, but also a synergy in issues that characterize our own University, which is the development of innovation and technology by our Faculty, and of science by the Faculty of Sciences, with the environmental characteristics and the other initiatives that it develops”.

From the Faculty of Sciences, Dr. Sergio Leiva, Executive Director of Ci2030 at the UACh and academic at the Institute of Biochemistry and Microbiology, highlighted the high participation of the academics and added that “they were two very enriching days that allowed us to get to know facilities, laboratories and capacities, and that is already an achievement because there was a lot of ignorance about what is done in the Faculty of Engineering. This meeting also allowed us to talk about future actions between both projects, with the aim of promoting inter and transdisciplinary research at our University”.

As part of the participants, Cristian Castillo Velásquez, student of the Master’s in Electricity and Applied Electronics, highlighted his interest in the activity, mainly “because it allowed us to see the laboratories and all the instrumentation they have in Science, which is very impressive. Being able to see what is being done here and learn about their research is important because it arouses interest in us as engineers to see that behind each device there is engineering and development, and that we do not later see what it is applied to. It also takes us out of that comfort zone where we continue to work and talk to engineers about the same thing, so knowing what they are doing here and what they need gives it meaning and gives us an objective of where we have to go with the tools. that we manage and can contribute”.

Within the framework of the sessions, academics from both faculties shared their experiences in the development of interdisciplinary projects and research, as was the case with Dr. Simón Poblete, from the Faculty of Sciences, who presented the main results of the research ” Exploring the three-dimensional structure of RNA viruses through multiscale simulations and distributed computing”, developed in conjunction with researchers from the Instituto de Informática.

On the occasion, Dr. Poblete appreciated that as a result of this relationship “the interdisciplinary experience has been super good and fundamental, because it has allowed me to have collaborators in the area that I research and, above all, it gives a sense of belonging to the University . I invite academics to participate in research or projects of this type because that way you have science with more impact, you can give a greater application to what you do and, above all, reach a broader audience”.

After the success of the conferences and to promote interdisciplinary lines of work, the Ci2030 and InnovING2030 projects will launch the Fund for collaborative innovation projects in engineering and science. The purpose of this call is to promote research or projects that are developed between the Faculty of Sciences and the Faculty of Engineering Sciences, with the aim of supporting researchers who are working on the development of new products, processes or services. that allow to establish the base for future technological developments.

The Exploratory Conference on Innovation and Development in Science and Technology are part of a collaboration agreement signed between the programs “InnovING2030: Innovating in Engineering from the South of the World” awarded by the Faculty of Engineering Sciences and “Science for innovation 2030 – South-Subantarctic Consortium, Ci2030”, in charge from the Faculty of Sciences of the Austral University of Chile.
