( ) – The 95th edition of the Oscars offered some surprises even before the start of the televised ceremony.
For the first time in six decades, the Academy Award nominees did not walk a red carpet. The one in this edition was champagne-colored and it was a decision by the Academy because, they indicated, they wanted a calmer environment.
According to The New York Timesgala host Jimmy Kimmel joked that the carpet’s color choice is because it “shows how sure we are that no blood will be spilled.”
“Everything” took away -almost- everything
“Everything Everywhere All At Once” came as the favorite of the night, not only for being the most nominated (with 11), but also because it has been one of the productions that has triumphed in awards on the Hollywood circuit.
The tape took seven Academy Awards:
- The most important award of the night: best film,
- Michelle Yeoh lifted the Oscar for best actress,
- Ke Huy Quan won the best supporting actor award,
- Jamie Lee Curtis won for best supporting actress,
- “The Daniels” jointly won best direction and best original screenplay,
- Paul Rogers won the Oscar for best editing.
Michelle Yeoh once again caused a stir with her acceptance speech, where she made reference – as well as at the Golden Globes – to women over a certain age.
The actress told the women “don’t let anyone tell you that you’re past your prime” and asked them to never give up.
“All Quiet In the Western Front,” another top nominee, garnered four Academy Awards, including Best Original Score, Best Production Design, and Best Foreign Film.
wins its first Academy Award
also made Academy Awards history by taking its first Oscar. “Navalny,” a Films production, won the award for best documentary. The piece portrays the political rise of Kremlin critic Alexey Navalny.
Directed by Daniel Roher and presented by Films and HBO Max, “Nalvany” documents a methodical investigation by ‘s Chief International Correspondent, Clarissa Ward, and the group of journalists, Bellingcat, to unmask Navalny’s possible killers. ( Films and HBO Max are part of Warner Bros. Discovery, our parent company.)
Nalvany is currently serving a nine-year sentence in a maximum security prison east of Moscow.
Lady Gaga and Rihanna shone in their presentations
One that caused emotion was the Oscar winner Lady Gaga, who finally did appear at the gala. She took the stage with her face washed and wearing torn black jeans and a t-shirt of the same color. Gaga performed her song “Hold My Hand” from the film “Top Gun: Maverick,” which was nominated for best original song.
Another outstanding performance was that of Rihanna, who performed her song “Lift Me Up” from the movie “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”
The Oscar-nominated song is a tribute to Chadwick Boseman, who played Black Panther. The actor passed away in 2020 at the age of 43 after battling colon cancer.
A donkey and a bear
There were no acts of violence like last year but there were animals on the stage of the Dolby Theater.
One of the surprises was the appearance of Jenny, the donkey from “The Banshees of Inisherin”. According to Jimmy Kimmel, Jenny, in addition to being an “actress” is an emotional support donkey.
They asked for it on social networks and it happened… Elizabeth Banks appeared on the Oscars stage with a bear. Fortunately, she is not the ghoulish bear in her film “Cocaine Bear.” The director used this resource to present the category of best visual effects. She said that without it, the bear from “Cocaine Bear” would look like the one on stage.
Later, the bear also appeared in the audience alongside Malala Yousafzai as the Nobel Prize winner was interviewed by Jimmy Kimmel.
the absences
In his opening monologue, Jimmy Kimmel joked about the absence of legendary director James Cameron at the 95th edition of the awards.
“You know that a Show It’s very long when James Cameron is not here,” said Jimmy Kimmel.
The presenter went on to explain what is rumored in Hollywood that is the reason why James Cameron did not attend the event.
“Some say James Cameron isn’t here because he wasn’t nominated for best director, and while I find it hard to believe that such a humble man, he has a point… How come the Academy doesn’t nominate the guy who directed ‘Avatar? Who do you think it is? A woman?” Kimmel said.
The criticism refers to the complete absence of female directors in the nominations this year.
Tom Cruise was also not present at the ceremony.
