The top diplomatic officer of the European Union, Josep Borrell, has condemned the “appalling precedent” represented by the execution in Iran of British Iranian citizen Alireza Akbari before declaring his opposition to the application of the death penalty “under any circumstances”.
The High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the EU has conveyed his condolences to Akbari’s family and expressed his “total solidarity with the United Kingdom”. “The execution of a European citizen is an appalling precedent that the EU will follow closely,” he declared.
“The death penalty violates the inalienable right to life enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and is the ultimate cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment,” it added.
