Ethiopian negotiators warn of a possible return to conflict in Tigray after the split of the TPLF

MADRID 19 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The National Commission for Dialogue in Ethiopia, one of the main interlocutors in the peace process in the Ethiopian state of Tigray, observes signs of great instability in the area for some time now, accentuated this month by the split within of the Tigray Popular Liberation Front (TPLF), former undisputed authority of the state.

The war that broke out between 2020 and 2022 between the Ethiopian Army and the TPLF has left important issues unresolved, according to the organization. There is currently an interim administration in Tigray that has significantly reduced the influence of the TPLF in a state where there are still pockets of conflict due to the presence of rival militias from the neighboring state of Amhara.

Finally, the TPLF ended up splitting itself in two with the statement, at the beginning of the month, when it announced the “dismissal” of five members of the interim administration of the region, including the acting president accepted by the Ethiopian Government, Getachew Reda. In front of him the figure of the president of the party, Debretsion Gebremichael, appears again, at the head of a new splinter branch.

Getachew has accused the TPLF chairman of undermining and fragmenting the administration, reducing the interim administration’s control over local governance. The Debretsion faction, for its part, accuses the administration of endangering the interests of the population and rejected some of the provisions of the Pretoria agreement with which they initially agreed.

The commission’s spokesperson, Tibebu Tadese, warns that “any dialogue needs a safe environment and right now there is no complete peace in Tigray,” reports the Addis Standard, where he denounces endless obstacles in the talks to implement the agreement. Peace of Pretoria (South Africa) to end a conflict that left between 100,000 and 600,000 dead.

The idea of the commission is now to focus on the situation in Ahmara, amid constant reports of attacks on the population by neighboring militias, and to expand the Pretoria talks to the largest number of actors participating in this conflict.
