ESA cancels E3 2023 for failing to wake up the "necessary interest"

The Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) conference of this year 2023, which was planned to be held from June 13 to 16, has been canceled after learning that some of the most relevant companies in the video game sector, such as Microsoft, Nintendo and Ubisoft, would not participate in the event and, therefore, would not having succeeded in arousing the “necessary interest”.

E3, one of the most recognized video game sector events in the industry, was scheduled to be held in person in Los Angeles (United States) for the first time since 2019, since it was also canceled in the year 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic and in the year 2022 for “deliver a revitalized experience” at the next E3.

Now the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has announced that E3 2023 has officially been cancelled, as communicated through a Twitter post.

It is also corroborated by IGN who has had access to the email sent to its team members notifying your cancellation. In said ’email’, the organization has expressed that the reasons for its cancellation are partly due to the fact that the E3 has failed to “garner the necessary sustained interest” how to get show “the size, strength and impact” of the industry of video games.

Despite this, ESA stresses that E3 “continues to be a much-loved event and brand,” although it does not expose more details on whether this exhibition will be organized again in the coming years.

For his part, he Global Vice President of Games at ReedPop, Kyle Marsden-Kish, has spoken in statements to The Verge collected by Europa Press, in which he has indicated that it has been a difficult decision”, due to all the effort of the organization but that they had to to do “what’s right for the industry and what’s right for E3.”

Likewise, Marsden-Kish has indicated that they appreciate and they understand that interested companies “would not have ready playable demos” and that “resource challenges” have made participating in this year’s E3 “an obstacle they couldn’t overcome.” Too a regretted that, for the companies that had committed to the event, E3 cannot be “the showcase they deserve.”

Despite all this, Marsden-Kish assures in his statement that ReedPop and the ESA they will work together again to host more E3 events.

Some video game companies who brought the most influence to E3 have announced its cancellation in the participation of the event During the last months. Among them, Nintendo and Sony with PlayStation were the first to communicate that they would not be part of this event in 2023. In fact, Sony has not attended for years.

Likewise, Microsoft with Xbox also detailed during this month of March that it would not offer its usual E3 face-to-face conference, but a presentation own online. Following this line, Ubisoft has been the last to confirm that it would not participate at the event, as he announced last Tuesday, claiming that he will organize his own non-E3 event, on June 12.
