The Shadow of the Erdtree expansion for Elden Ring includes an all-new story that takes players beyond the Middle Lands to explore the Shadow Land, a map with an even more sinister setting. To access this new area you must first defeat Radahn, Scourge of Stars, and the optional boss Mohg, Lord of Blood. After these two victories, it will be enough to go to Mohgwyn’s Palace to travel to the Shadow Land, an interconnected world whose size has been compared to that of Necrolimbo.
As they begin their journey through the Shadow Land, players will soon learn that the new protagonist is Messmer the Impaler, one of Marika’s sons whose intentions are a mystery. It is also not known who his father is. Another question is knowing what Miquella is doing. As in any other FromSoftware work, the story will develop little by little and the most curious will surely find clues in any corner of the map. Even with the expansion it is possible that elements of the original game take on a new meaning.
Returning to the Shadow Land, players can expect a map with a similar structure to the rest, with large open environments, legacy dungeons, and dungeons of different sizes, but with a few changes. The new area is denser and richer, offering greater depth, and the layout of dungeons and open areas has changed for a more fluid gameplay experience. There is also a poisonous swamp. One of FromSoftware’s missions in delivering a great map is for players to have freedom of exploration and a sense of adventure, things that are not achieved with lesser content.
Beyond the new zone, Shadow of the Erdtree adds more than ten boss fights, eight new types of weapons, equipment and abilities. The new options open the door to a style of martial arts that has been described as a dark fantasy Sifu. On the other hand, the difficulty will remain and there will be a particularly complicated fight like that of Malenia. Anyone who wants a less challenging experience will find a consumable that can help out.
Shadow of the Erdtree is the largest expansion FromSoftware has worked on to date and is also the most highly reviewed additional content ever. The average score is 95 out of 100, practically the same as that of the base game, which is considered one of the best of the century.
