Eidos founder thinks Square Enix is ​​preparing to sell itself to PlayStation

The video game industry is in a consolidation stage. That means that big companies are buying other smaller ones to strengthen their position within the industry. It already happened with Xbox buying Bethesda Softworks and Activision Blizzard or with Sony with the acquisition of Bungie and other studios.

There are a lot of rumors about this and one of them is that Sony is going to buy Square Enix to strengthen PlayStation. In fact, there are those who believe that the recent sale of their western studios is because they are preparing to sell and one of the founders of Eidos Montreal believes that this is what will happen.

Recently, Stephane D’Astous, founder of Eidos Montreal, gave an interview to GamesIndustry.biz. In it, he discussed the sale of the studio to Embracer Group, a company that already has a lot of development studios.

In the conversation, Stephane D’Astous noted that he was surprised by the low price at which Square Enix sold all of its Western studios. That said, he considered that it was something that had been seen since he left the company in 2013. Despite this, he believes that the sale is not a coincidence and that it could mean something more.

“If I read between the lines, Square Enix in Japan was not as engaged as we initially hoped. And obviously there are rumors with all this M&A activity that Sony really wanted to have Square Enix with them. Should you believe what the founder of Eidos Montreal says?

For someone as important in the industry as the founder of Eidos Montreal to say this must mean this, right? Not necessarily.

The first thing to note is that D’Astous left Eidos Montreal in 2013, so he hasn’t worked for Square Enix in a while. So, although he undoubtedly has contacts in the industry, he may no longer have those who can confirm a deal like this for him. Especially when we consider that these agreements are usually kept secret until they become official to prevent profiteers from manipulating the market with this privileged information.
