The Natural Resources Division (DRN) and the Latin American and Caribbean Institute for Economic and Social Planning (ILPES), of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (CEPAL), together with the Deutsche Gelleschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), will carry out the second version of the Virtual Course “Lithium, a strategic resource. Governance, global production networks and sustainability”, from July 31 to September 24, 2023.
The call for this second version of the course is open and is aimed at participants from academia, civil society, NGOs, governments and the general public.
The virtual course “Lithium, a strategic resource. Governance, global production networks and sustainability” offers an introduction to fundamental issues that concern this mineral resource. He program The virtual course includes six modules and will be developed virtually through the ILPES/ECLAC Moodle platform. The modules will address basic notions related to geological, contractual, productive, market, global production networks linked to electromobility, tax and productive, social and environmental governance aspects. In each module, reading material, content presentations supported by audiovisual media and reference bibliographic sources will be offered.
It is expected that at the end of the course the student will have: i) general knowledge about lithium mining aimed at a more sustainable exploitation of the resource; and, ii) conceptual tools to understand the specific problems and challenges that lithium exploitation, innovation and value addition may have.

The student selection process requires that those interested in the course complete a form with personal information and present a letter of motivation indicating how you think the course could benefit your professional development and that of the organization to which you belong. In addition, the letter must indicate how the knowledge and experience of the student candidate could contribute to the development of the course.
Applications will be received until May 31, 2023.
In the week of June 12, 2023, a letter of invitation to participate in the course will be sent via email to the selected students.
The selected students must confirm their participation in the course no later than June 23, 2023.
If there are places available, after June 23, 2023 new invitations will be sent, via email, to the preselected student candidates until the places are filled.
