ECLAC Bulletin highlights the role of critical minerals in the region for a more productive, inclusive and sustainable extraction model

The Bulletin, prepared annually by the Natural Resources Division of ECLAC, emphasizes that to take advantage of the opportunities of mining activity in the region and minimize its potential threats, a long-term strategic vision is required that seeks economic and social development. , and environmental protection.

For the region to move towards more sustainable extraction models, the Bulletin presents data, analysis and policy guidelines to formulate a regional strategy based on extractive resources, based on greater deployment of renewable energies in the mining sector, a management comprehensive water, new circular economy models, revaluation of waste, lower carbon footprint and protection of critical natural heritage.

The ECLAC Document also examines the context of the energy transition, the regionalization of value chains and technological innovation, and the challenge posed by the mining transition and its contribution to a structural change that brings our countries closer. to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development.

The Publication contains a set of guidelines so that extractive resources can better contribute to a more productive, inclusive and sustainable future for the region. ECLAC proposes to strengthen institutions related to the mining sector and their technical, operational, political and prospective (TOPP) capacities so that the implementation of public policies is effective and contributes better to the transformation of extractive activity and development models. in the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean.

In this sixth edition, the Bulletin of Natural Resources in Latin America and the Caribbean presents an analysis of how mining activity in the region faces the challenge of participating in the mining cycle associated with critical minerals for the energy transition. To take advantage of the opportunities and face the challenges, a new governance of non-renewable natural resources will be necessary throughout the life cycle of mining, which is multi-level, transparent, democratic and effective, and which has a territorial approach.
