From Castillo’s perspective, the authorities have not only ignored the voice of those who work under this modality, but have also focused the conversation on Mexico City and the delivery partners, leaving aside the people who work outside the city. demarcation and drivers, who would also be impacted by the reform.
Both drivers and delivery people have expressed that they are in favor of the implementation of social security as long as it maintains the flexibility schemes they currently have and is handled as an alternative and not an imposition.
The National Survey of Driver and App Delivery Partners in Mexico, conducted by Quadrant Strategies, highlights that 85% of partners prefer to be independent workers (as opposed to being employees and subject to a fixed schedule) and that 90% prefer flexibility that the platforms offer to have total control of their schedules, above other benefits.
Castillo explains that President Claudia Sheinbaum’s proposal cannot be adopted by everyone, since for many working on platforms is an extra income, not the only one. According to the National Survey of Rideshare and Delivery Drivers in Mexico, six out of 10 drivers have another responsibility in their life, such as another job, education or care work.
“Without detracting from the issue (of the delivery people), we feel ignored. The problem of a delivery person is not the same, nor the same needs or obligations as those of a driver,” commented Castillo.
According to the driver, in addition to the nature of the work, another significant difference is the investment they make in their work units, in this case cars.
Castillo points out that the average expense is 300,000 pesos for a new car; as well as the insurance that must include damage to third parties and personal injuries in its coverage – the price may vary depending on the vehicle – but in the case of Castillo he says that he pays 32,000 pesos a year, in addition to higher gasoline consumption, maintenance, among others. other expenses.
It also points out that the pace of work and conditions change in other states, so it would be necessary to open dialogue tables in all the districts in which app-based taxis operate in order to take into account the different realities.
