DRC warns that the M23 rebel group has "plans" to attack Goma, capital of North Kivu province

Dec. 29 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has warned that the March 23 Movement (M23) rebel group maintains its plans to attack the city of Goma, capital of the North Kivu province (east), and has stressed that it would mean a blow to the ceasefire agreement agreed in Angola.

The Congolese Defense Minister, Gilbert Kabanda, has indicated that the rebel group has “plans” for its offensive and has stressed that “the Army remains on alert and determined to defend the integrity of the national territory”, according to the portal of News Update.

Kabanda’s statements come days after the Congolese authorities denounced that the rebels had not withdrawn from the town of Kibumba, as they announced they would do on Friday. “There has been no withdrawal of the M23 rebels from the area,” said the head of the Kibumba group, Boniface Kishire, who has indicated that “there has been no withdrawal of the M23 rebels from the area.”

The DRC Army affirmed on Saturday that the announcement of the M23 “is a hoax and an act of publicity to distract the Congolese and the international community”, while again denouncing that the rebel group receives support from Rwanda, something denied in multiple times around Kigali.
