Dozens of soldiers mutiny at base in Somalia's capital

Jul 22. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Dozens of Somali army soldiers staged a mutiny on Sunday at one of the bases located in the capital, Mogadishu, to denounce their situation and some measures adopted by the government, amid the increase in operations against Al Shabaab, a group linked to the terrorist organization Al Qaeda.

According to information gathered by the Somali news portal Somali Guardian, the mutiny took place at the Jaalel Siyad Military Academy to denounce that the Ministry of Defense had ordered the military to bring its own weapons to the front line.

Several videos circulating on social media show soldiers firing into the air and accusing the Ministry of Defense of “incompetence,” although the authorities have not commented on the matter and there is no information on casualties so far.

Meanwhile, Somalia’s Deputy Information Minister Abdirahman Yusuf al-Adala said that Somali forces have prevented several Al-Shabaab offensives in Lower Juba in the south of the country, without providing a death toll from these operations.

Somalia has in recent months stepped up offensives against Al Shabaab with the support of clans and local militias as part of a series of decisions taken by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who promised upon taking office in May 2022 to put the fight against terrorism at the heart of his efforts to stabilise the African country.
