With two national awards, outstanding doctoral theses, accreditation until 2029, and an extensive number of years of experience, the Doctorate in Sciences with a mention in Physics established itself with a great reputation in the academy.
The Doctorate in Sciences with a mention in Physics from the University of Chile is an interfaculty program promoted by the graduate schools and the Physics departments of the University of Chile. Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (FCFM) and the Faculty of Sciences (FC)). Y Its purpose is to train graduates with knowledge that contributes to the area of physics, through research whose results are publishable in mainstream indexed journals. They must also have a great conceptual, deep and up-to-date domain of their specialty area.
Currently, Luis Foas acts as general and local coordinator (in the FCFM) of the postgraduate degree in Physics that includes a doctorate and also a Master’s degree, he indicated that “the program is one of the most traditional in the country and has 8 years of accreditation granted by the CNA in 2021. We have scholarships that cover most of the fee. Those who graduate have solid knowledge that allows them to insert themselves in Universities, research entities at an international level and also in the industry”.
Secondly, Francis Munoz, local coordinator for the FC highlighted that the main characteristic of the plan are its lines of research, in addition to the great academic faculty that composes it and differentiates it from other courses.
“It is one of the oldest programs in the country and the faculty it has is large, much more than typical since we are two faculties, in addition, several of our academics and from other universities are our graduates, in this case, at least 11 of our faculty left our graduate programs.”
Their lines of investigation They are: condensed matter, nuclear physics, surface physics, magnetism, plasma physics, nonlinear physics and complex systems, statistical physics, fluids, atomic and molecular physics, relativity and astrophysics, nonlinear optics, and matter out of equilibrium.
In relation to the curricular study plan, the program has compulsory courses such as: Quantum Mechanics II, Statistical Mechanics, Electrodynamics and Classical Mechanics. On the other hand, the elective courses are Introductory, Advanced and Colloquia. in addition to the Examination of degree and the elaboration and defense of Thesis. Subjects can only be taken twice. The minimum number of credits to pass is 240, designed for eight semesters.
Muñoz also mentioned that they have a new decree that was updated four years ago, in addition to the recognition of two national awards. On the other hand, he indicated the distinction made by the Chilean Academy of Sciences to several of his students “Best Doctoral Thesis”among them, Felipe Valencia.
