Cui Maohu, in the crosshairs of the Anti-Corruption Bureau: they investigate his activities in Yunnan, his home province. Since June 2022, the official has been in charge of SARA, the body and executive arm of the United Front of the Chinese Communist Party. Cui’s case marks the third high-level disciplinary action since the annual session of parliament concluded.
Beijing () – The authorities removed from his post and are investigating Cui Maohu, head of the State Administration for Religious Affairs (SARA) and one of the deputy directors of the United Front Work Department of the Chinese Communist Party. The information was confirmed by the Central Commission for Disciplinary Inspection and by the National Supervision Commission, the highest anti-corruption body.
Cui is being investigated for committing serious disciplinary offenses and violating state laws, authorities revealed on March 18. It is worth mentioning that such an expression is often used to indicate a case of corruption. As reported Sing Tao Dailyhe is being investigated mainly for matters related to his performance in Yunnan, his home province.
The 57-year-old Xuanwei native graduated with a degree in Philosophy from the Political Science Department of Yunnan University and worked for years in the Organization Department of the Provincial Committee of the Chinese Communist Party. In June 2022, he was appointed to lead SARA, holding a position in the United Front.
Previously, SARA was known as the “Religious Affairs Office”, an independent body under the authority of the Council of State (the central government). In March 2018, it came under the direct control of the Party, functioning as the executive arm of the United Front for the religious sphere.
Cui’s case marks the third high-level disciplinary action since the conclusion of the annual session of the National People’s Congress, coinciding with the formal start of Xi Jinping’s third term (currently in Moscow, paying a visit to Vladimir Putin).
