The first postgraduate program of the School of Digital Design and Creative Industries of the San Sebastián University seeks to educate decision makers in terms of the technologies that converge in the metaverse, and how value can be created for society and industry .
The Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Design of the San Sebastian Universityhas opened the “Diploma in Metaverse: Opportunities to Innovate and Design Value”, a literacy program on the metaverse, the new paradigm of the digital age that brings together multiple technologies to converge in a collaborative virtual space.
This diploma, which will start from May 2023arises from the need to update and train professionals linked to decision-making in companies and public and/or private institutions so that they respond to an area of digital transformation that society and industry are experiencing.
“The evolution of man has brought about the transformations of humanity through collaboration. Collaboration implies interactions and the metaverse is a new opportunity to generate value in that dimension”, points out carlos hinrichsendirector of the School of Digital Design and Creative Industries.
Hinrichsen comments that The USS wanted to be part of this new digital stage, first through a joint Masterclass with the Technological Institute of Monterreycarried out in November 2022, and then, after the creation of this diploma.
The program director, Ricardo Cortes Ballerino, He points out that “this postgraduate course will allow people to become literate so that they understand the broad sense of what this paradigm is and they are not left alone with the headlines. By understanding the metaverse and its components, along with initial use cases, you will have a conceptual foundation for exploring business initiatives and opportunities.”, indicated the director.
Cortés refers to the metaverse as “news in development.” He points out that while multiple posts are coming out about this and it seems more like a trendy concept, it is far from reality. The big corporations, the big banks, the international consultancies are already developing a very deep strategy on and in the metaverse.
The metaverse was discussed at the World Economic Forum in Davos, even here in Chile, in the Future Congress. “Really interesting papers are being generated, showing everything that can come with this paradigm. Today we are facing a new stage of the digital age, so it is important to have a broad understanding of the dimensions of the metaverse, its different styles and nascent use cases”, says the academic.

The concept of the metaverse is generally associated with gaming platforms. However, it is necessary to understand technology more as a way of working on solutions for people and their quality of life. In this way, the industry’s efforts have focused on promoting platforms for mass use to bring technologies closer, providing new ways of interacting with the digital.
In this sense, for example, the iconic devices of the metaverse emerge, which are virtual reality glasses, and which can be decisive for our digital interaction. But that has to talk with various underlying technologies, which are going to be at the service of business and value models, and that are part of the object of study of this diploma.
Among the technologies that converge in the metaverse is everything that has to do with decentralization, web 3.0, blockchain, NFTs, cryptocurrencies; In general, any asset model that in some way begins to have a digital reflection; in digital identity and how that identity can transit and become the users’ own.
Another important element is the connectivity and processing speeds and capacities that we have seen today, how they have increased 5G, cloud computing, edge computing, etc
On the other hand, the development of artificial intelligence is advancing by giant steps, with new ways of interpreting art, photography, etc. “That artificial intelligence that begins to understand language, conversations, gestures. We have seen what happens with the GPT Chat, which has amazed us all with what it is capable of doing”, says Cortés.
