The death toll from the collapse that occurred last week in a building under construction in the city of George, in southern South Africa, has increased to 33, according to local authorities.
The George Town Council has indicated on its website that of the deceased – 27 men and six women – they have identified 18 people, who are South Africans (seven), Malawians (five), Zimbabweans (three), two Mozambicans and one lessotense.
On the other hand, there are still 19 people whose whereabouts are unknown. In addition, twelve are hospitalized, without specifying their condition, while 62 have been rescued and are recovered.
South Africa’s Police Minister, Bheki Cele, stated on Sunday that the contractors of the building that collapsed have not provided the information requested by the authorities, according to the news portal News24. However, he asserted that “if the company does not collaborate, they will have the law and the legislation.”
