The 80-year-old Breaking Bad actor was involved in a fight after a parade-goer reportedly threw a water balloon at the From Duck To Dawn star’s vintage convertible during a Fourth of July parade in Los Angeles.
The altercation reportedly occurred during the Independence Day Parade in Sunland-Tujunga, Los Angeles. According to ABC 7 Los Angeleswith the scenes captured on camera.
In the footage, Trejo can be seen driving down the parade route when his light blue convertible was attacked by a water balloon. Trejo immediately jumped out of his stunning classic car and threw a punch at the alleged culprit, who was wearing a tank top and a backwards hat.
But despite the Machete actor’s daring attempt, his punch missed the target and he ended up thrown to the ground. The identity of the other passengers in Trejo’s car has yet to be confirmed; however, disturbing images show two children being hastily removed from the vehicle.
Almost instantly, a fight broke out to the death, with several more joining in. Fists flew as the alleged perpetrator traded blows with another man, before the fight spilled onto the sidewalks where spectators had gathered for the parade. In the dramatic clip, Trejo can be seen picking himself up off the ground and throwing a green folding chair at the rowdy group.
The Los Angeles Police Department received a call about a fight on the parade route, but by the time they arrived, the crowd had already dispersed and no arrests were made, TMZ reports. The same publication also reports Trejo’s comments on the matter. Speaking to TMZ, the 80-year-old actor described the water balloon thrown at his Corvette as “childish” and called those who did it “cowards.”
In 2021, Trejo opened up about a terrifying experience from his past that could have cost him his life before he rose to fame. The Hollywood icon revealed that he was once involved in a “thousand-person riot” during his time in prison, an incident that left him fearing he would be sentenced to death.
Born in California, Trejo, who has over 400 film credits to his name, spent time in some of America’s most notorious prisons, including San Quentin and Folsom, before making it big in Tinseltown as one of the industry’s most beloved antiheroes. During his time in prison, he was involved in a mass riot with other inmates, during which he accidentally hit a guard with a rock intended for another inmate. This mistake led him to fear that he would be sent to “the gas chamber” for attempted murder.
Speaking to The Sun in 2021, Trejo recalled the terror he felt at the time: “We were waiting for the gas chamber, which I accepted, but I thought, ‘Let me die with dignity, I don’t want to pee my pants and shit and scream. ’” In his desperation, he made a plea to a higher power: “I begged, ‘God, if you let me die with dignity, I will say your name every day and do what I can for my fellow prisoners. ’”
He clarified that he used the term “inmates” because, at the time, he believed he would never get out of prison. However, fate had other plans for the future star. The case against him was eventually dismissed due to lack of evidence, allowing him to walk free and continue his successful acting career.
Upon his release from prison, Danny was told that he had been given a second chance at life and he took it. The talented actor has been sober since 1969 and has starred in some of the most iconic television series and films over the years.
