Crash Team Rumble is a new installment of the series created by Naughty Dog that will be focused on multiplayer. This does not mean, however, that it will not have news for lovers of the history of this franchise, since it has just been confirmed that it will mark the debut of a character never seen in the series and that it will also be the first of a non-binary gender.
In the middle of Pride Month 2023, the studio responsible for Crash Team Rumble announced that Catbat, one of his new characters belongs to the LGBTQIA + community, since he identifies as someone neither male nor female.

Who is Catbat, the first non-binary character of crash bandicoot?
The character has the design of a bat with feminine features, but who identifies as non-binary. Toys for Bob mentions that he was based on the multi-faceted singer David Bowie, in the sense of “a rock star who breaks certain expectations and has confidence and talent that is simply magnetic.”
Like Crash Bandicoot, Catbat was an experiment for the evil Dr. Neo Cortex, until he managed to escape from his prison. Then the character was in a bad state, but thanks to the kindness of a rocker he found a love for this genre and help his fellow bats, and thus he formed a family to sabotage the plans of Dr. Neo Cortex and put an end to his cruel experiments. This was the past of Catbat, which Toys for Bob revealed through a comic and in Crash Team Rumble he will meet the villain again.
When Catbat was revealed, in the announcement trailer from months ago, the character’s original designer, Nicholas Kole, revealed via his Twitter account that the character was non-binary and today Dan Neil, creative director, and Paul Yan, one of the heads of Toys for Bob, reaffirmed this.

Some people might think that this is forced inclusion, but Toys for Bob doesn’t think so, believing that it was something that happened “very organically”.
Yan explained that after coming up with the design, the team naturally began referring to Catbat without specifying its gender (in English this is possible by using the pronoun they) and that it wasn’t something that required a meeting or something like some. they might think.
“From my perspective, a rock star was our goal that we were aiming for with this character and that defined everything that came out of it. I don’t think there was a premise of ‘how do we solve this? That being said, the game will not emphasize the personality of the characters, but fans will be able to find out more about them on the side.
“We didn’t see it as a big problem, to be honest. He’s a super cool character. It was like the right thing to do. (…) There’s no reason why we don’t recognize the way we perceive the character,” Neil expressed.
It is common for those responsible for movies, series or video games to want their characters to be interpreted by people who share their gender, so for Catbat Toys for Bob they chose Erika Ishii, a voice actress who defines her gender as fluid.
