Representatives of the national statistical offices of the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean reaffirmed today the importance of generating more and better data for decision-making and thus making visible the different problems that exist in the region, during the closing of the twenty-first meeting of the Executive Committee of the Statistical Conference of the Americas (SCA), which ended today at the headquarters of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in Santiago, Chile.
Delegations from 28 member states of ECLAC and 4 associate members participated in the meeting, in addition to representatives of the agencies, funds and programs of the United Nations System, international organizations and academia.
In the final resolution, unanimously approved by the countries present at the meeting, the Executive Committee of the Statistical Conference of the Americas called for the continuation of the implementation of the population and housing censuses of the 2020 round, taking into consideration the lessons learned from recent experiences, as well as international recommendations and standards on the matter, in support of the production of essential indicators and statistics for decision-making.
Likewise, he highlighted the urgency of identifying complementary indicators to the GDP for the measurement of development on issues such as gender gaps and the various manifestations of inequalities, unpaid work and the relationship with the environment and its ecosystems, among others.
He also welcomed the advances in the development of the information system for the permanent updating of the inventory of national capacities for the production of the indicators of the Sustainable Development Goals.
The Executive Committee of the CEA valued the effort made by the Working Groups to incorporate the gender perspective in their work, as a contribution to gender equality, the elimination of stereotypes and the formulation of policies through the inclusion of this approach. in the activities of production, analysis and use of statistical information.
At the closing ceremony, Marco Lavagna, Director of the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC) of Argentina, the country that holds the Presidency of the CEA, urged deepening regional cooperation and collaboration to optimize and make work much more efficient of the national statistical offices.
For his part, Rolando Ocampo, Director of the Statistics Division of ECLAC, highlighted the success of the meeting and thanked all the entities and experts who made the twenty-first meeting of the Executive Committee of the SCA possible.
During the meeting, the participants thanked the presentation of the document “Breaking the statistical silence to achieve gender equality in 2030” as a joint contribution of the Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean and the Statistical Conference of the Americas for strengthen the production of information on gender inequalities and contribute to the implementation of the Montevideo Strategy for the Implementation of the Regional Gender Agenda in the Framework of Sustainable Development by 2030.
Finally, they expressed their satisfaction with the progress made in the implementation of the 2021 cycle of the International Comparison Program in the region and urged the countries to continue supporting information needs and move towards incorporating these tasks into the regular work programs of statistical institutions, applying international recommendations and standards on the matter and taking into consideration the relevance of their results in the production of essential indicators and statistics for decision-making.
The Executive Committee of the CEA is chaired by Argentina and is made up of Canada, Colombia, Granada, Italy, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic.
