Congress approves Omar Mejía as the new deputy governor of Banxico

The day before, Omar Mejía had told the deputies that as a member of Banxico’s Governing Board he would ensure the bank’s autonomy and fight against inflation.

Senator Emilio Álvarez Icaza was one of those who spoke out against its ratification and stressed in his speech that a re-election of Gerardo Esquivel would have been a good choice because he had shown that he had no commitment to President López Obrador.

Mejía Castelazo has been an adviser to the highest authority of the central bank since 2019 and even in May 2022 wrote together with the deputy governor Galia Borja a article on inflation targets and the Covid pandemic .

Mejía is a graduate of Economics from UNAM, with a specialization in monetary and financial economics, he has a solid academic foundation and extensive experience to fulfill this responsibility.
