The former international player with Russia, Alexey Bugaevdied at the age of 43 while fighting in the Ukrainian war as part of the Russian army. The news was given by his lawyer, Anton Smirnovwho had already defended him last September when he faced a nine and a half year sentence for drug trafficking.

Bugaev, who participated in Euro 2004 and played for clubs such as Torpedo Moscow, Lokomotiv, Khimki and Krasnodar, managed to commute his prison sentence by enlisting on the front lines. This program, promoted by the Russian government, offered him the possibility of obtaining a pardon in exchange for serving in the war against Ukraine.

However, not even three months have passed since he was sent to the front when the former footballer was found dead. His death was also confirmed by his father, Ivan Bugaevwho told local media: “Unfortunately, the news about Alexey’s death is true.” His lawyer also lamented the extreme circumstances of the conflict, which have so far prevented his body from being recovered for burial.

Alexey Bugaev’s sports career was marked by ups and downs. Throughout his career, he played for prominent teams in the Russian league such as Lokomotiv and Krasnodar, making his debut with the national team in 2004. He played two games in the European Championship that year, facing Portugal and Greece, the host and the tournament champion, respectively. He retired from football in 2010, at the age of 29.

After leaving the playing fields, his personal life took a drastic turn. In 2023, he was arrested for trying to sell almost half a kilo of methylephedrine, a doping substance. The arrest occurred when he was on his way to the Sochi resort, and during his detention, the former soccer player admitted his guilt and showed regret for what happened. According to reports, he also faced disciplinary problems during his career, derived from his love of alcohol.

The case of Alexey Bugaev symbolizes a tragic fall from sporting success to an end marked by war and complex personal decisions. The Russian football community remembers him as a talented player who represented his country in one of the biggest international tournaments, but whose life ended prematurely on the battlefield. His death adds to the long list of casualties from the conflict that has deeply marked both sides.
