Barely a day after suspending the reception of flights with Colombians returned from the United States, the Colombian immigration authority announced on Friday that these will resume, starting next week.
Fernando García, general director of Migration Colombia, assured through a video posted on his Twitter account that agreements have been reached with the North American country, which, in addition to the return of people, includes the creation “of two tables of work with a human rights perspective that will prepare two protocols that seek to guarantee the integrity of returned travelers”.
The news comes after the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that, after the termination of Title 42, on May 11, will continue to carry out dozens of flights weekly of expulsion.
On Thursday, Migration Colombia had denounced “cruel and degrading” treatment suffered by deported Colombian migrants. According to the statement, there was a “breach of the agreements on the humanitarian treatment of returned Colombians.”
“There are recurring complaints about the poor conditions in the detention centers and mistreatment during flights, which represented a determining factor in the decisions adopted in the last few hours,” García added.
According to the US Customs and Border Protection, the number of Colombian migrants trying to enter the US has skyrocketed in recent years, with more than 125,000 apprehended at the southern border last year.
