Clashes over dam construction leave three dead and 12 injured in eastern Ethiopia

22 Jan. (EUROPA PRESS) –

At least three civilians have been killed and a dozen others injured during a clash between armed militias from Ethiopia’s Oromia region and residents of neighboring Somali region on the border between the two, in the east of the country.

The clashes began on Friday, when local Oromo government employees began building a dam in the Marar Kebele border area, which Somali residents say is actually within the Tulu Guled district of the Fafan area, in their region.

The construction thus faced the rejection of local residents, who disputed the authority of the Oromia regional state government to unilaterally build this dam within, in their opinion, the Somali region, local sources reported to the ‘Addis Standard’.

This confrontation is one more within the scenario of habitual violence in the Oromia region. The United Nations has warned of a “rapid deterioration” in the situation in the area, particularly in the west.

There, the infrastructure is virtually devastated and more than 10,000 people have fled their homes in recent weeks, mainly due to ongoing clashes between the Oromo Liberation Army (ELO) and government forces.
