China manages to cultivate rice tolerant to saltwater irrigation

The Chinese Academy of Sciences has announced a new trial with a variant of rice capable of tolerating salt water irrigation called Yanhuangxiangjing and which has produced 505.1 kilograms of rice per 600 square meters.

The Institute of Genetics and Biological Development of the Academy is responsible for this rice field planted in Dongying, in the province of Shandong, in the east of the country, according to the Chinese portal ‘Global Times’.

A spokesman for the agency, Wang Jianlin, stressed that China has a large area of ​​saline land with agricultural potential, which would significantly increase rice production, the basis of food throughout Asia.

The Yanhuangxiangjing variant is salt tolerant, can be grown from July to September, is disease resistant, efficient with water consumption, and produces quality rice.

The record for rice production per mu (600 square meters) is held by a variant that was harvested on October 13 and achieved 691.8 kilos per mu of land.
