China-backed hackers attack critical US infrastructure

Multiple Intelligence Agencies Issue Advisory After Microsoft Reveals “Stealthy Malicious Activity”

The intelligence agencies of the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom have published a joint advisory on Wednesday about the attack on critical US infrastructure by Chinese-sponsored hackers.

This advisory, which includes technical details, “highlights a recently discovered group of activity of interest associated with a state-sponsored cyber actor from the People’s Republic of China (PRC), also known as Volt Typhoon.

“Private sector partners have identified that this activity affects networks in US critical infrastructure sectors, and the author agencies believe that the actor could apply the same techniques against these and other sectors around the world,” the statement reads. .

For its part, Microsoft has reported that it “has discovered stealthy and targeted malicious activity focused on post-compromise credential access and network system discovery targeting critical infrastructure organizations in the United States.”

“The attack is carried out by Volt Typhoon, a China-based state-sponsored actor that generally focuses on espionage and information gathering,” says the company, adding that this campaign pursues the development of “capabilities that could disrupt critical communications infrastructure between the US and the Asian region during future crises.”
