The military authorities of Chad have announced that the national dialogue process to address the transition will start on August 20, after several postponements of the process, which was to have started in May in Qatar, amid pressure to promote these contacts with a view to to the holding of elections in the African country.
The government spokesman, Abdraman Koulamallah, has indicated that the transitional Prime Minister, Albert Pahimi Padacké, has signed a decree setting the date of the call for talks, in which various rebel groups are expected to participate, according to the Chadian news portal Alwihda.
Thus, the prime minister has detailed that the date has been agreed with the Transitional Military Council (CMT), led by Mahamat Idriss Déby, who took office after the death in April 2021 of his father, Idriss Déby, in combat with the rebels of the Front for Alternation and Concord in Chad (FACT).
“This is a unique opportunity to definitively settle our differences through words”, said Padacké, who pointed out that he “has faith” that after these contacts a “perfect fraternity” and a “united and strong” country will be achieved in that “the transfer of power is never by arms, but through the ballot box”.
The CMT appointed in May 2021 a new transitional government in which some opponents are integrated and with Albert Pahimi Padacké as Prime Minister. Déby has stressed that he does not seek to remain in power forever and has promised to work towards the stabilization of the country and the holding of elections.
The death of Déby –who had held power since 1990, after leading a coup that overthrew the dictator Hissène Habré– in the middle of the FACT offensive has been a serious blow to the stability of the country and the region, due to the importance of the territory in the fight against international terrorism in the Sahel and the Lake Chad basin.
