Canada sanctions six individuals and entities accused of undermining peace and security in Sudan

The Canadian authorities announced this Monday the imposition of sanctions against six individuals and entities accused of “undermining peace and security” in Sudan, where today marks one year since the outbreak of the conflict between the Army and the paramilitary Support Forces. Fast (RSF).

The Canadian Foreign Ministry has indicated in a statement that the sanctions respond to the “continued conflict” in the African country, which “does not seem to be coming to an end,” and has warned that the violence has caused “serious and systematic violations of the Human rights”.

Thus, he clarified that among those sanctioned are the leader of the RSF, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, the former Foreign Minister Ali Karti and four companies – some of them linked to the military industry -. Some of them are linked to the Sudanese Armed Forces.

The sanctions target these two individuals and four entities for incurring these violations “directly or indirectly,” as the Ministry points out in a statement.

“The reports of serious violations and abuses of Human Rights and violations of International Law that are being committed in the current conflict in Sudan are deeply worrying. Today's measures are consistent with Canadian principles and values,” said the Minister of Exteriors, Mélanie Joly.

“Canada condemns the violence that is prolonging the crisis in Sudan and calls on all parties to immediately cease hostilities, allow the rapid and unimpeded passage of humanitarian aid and participate meaningfully in mediation efforts,” he concluded.
