Burkina Faso will hold its "national assembly" next week to appoint a new "transitional president"

Oct. 8 (EUROPA PRESS) –

Burkina Faso’s coup leader, Captain Ibrahim TraorĂ©, has called the so-called “national assembly” for October 14 and 15 to appoint a new “transitional president” after last week’s military coup that overthrew Paul -Henri Sandaogo Damiba.

These meetings will be held in the country’s capital, Ouagadougou, and they will ratify the so-called Transition Letter that will collect the steps to be taken by the country towards the calling of elections, according to the decree collected by Radio Omega.

It must be remembered that TraorĂ© now holds the position of “transitional president” after the adoption this week of a “fundamental law” intended to “guarantee the continuity of the State” until the new transitional bodies are created.

The coup, considered a ‘palace coup’ by a sector of the military junta opposed to Damiba – who has fled to Togo -, took place in the face of the continued deterioration of the security situation and attacks by jihadist groups .

Burkina Faso has generally experienced a significant increase in insecurity since 2015, with attacks carried out by both the Al Qaeda affiliate and the Islamic State affiliate, causing a wave of internally displaced persons and refugees towards other countries of the region.
