Point-and-click adventures are no longer in fashion, or at least their popularity is not the same as it was in the 90s, but seeing the number of veterans on EOL, surely more than one remembers Broken Sword. The saga will come back to life with Parzival’s Stone, but before offering a new chapter, Revolution Software wanted to take a look back with the launch of Broken Sword – The Legend of the Templars: Reforged, a “greatly improved” version of the first installment that is available today for PS5, Xbox Series and PC (Steam and GOG) for 29.99 euros. The Nintendo Switch version will arrive later.

Broken Sword – Legend of the Templars: Reforged is a 4K version that goes far beyond simply increasing the resolution of the original game released in 1996. The original backgrounds in the title are drawn in pencil, but when they passed through the hands of the digital colorist, he often made some adjustments that differed from the original work. Revolution Software has rescued the original backgrounds to serve as the game’s canon and the basis for the new high-resolution designs, which is why veteran players will appreciate differences that can sometimes be noticeable.

“For example, in the Paris museum, the layout artist had originally drawn a sphinx, but then the colorist had decided to save time by using images of a goddess that he had probably adapted from a photograph,” explains Charles Cecil, Founder and CEO of Revolution Software. This enhanced version of Broken Sword – Legend of the Templars brings back the Sphinx. As well as respecting the original vision, this process allows for much greater detail and sharper visual quality to the backgrounds, which should result in a better experience for the player.

Revolution Software has also redrawn the sprites animated using the original character sheets as reference, and in the process has improved them so that they look good in 4K. On the other hand, the interface and user experience have been completely revamped, but there is the option to keep the traditional approach and even switch between it and the modern one.

What hasn’t changed in Broken Sword – Legend of the Templars: Reforged is the story. It follows George Stobbart and journalist Nico Collard as they embark on an investigative adventure that takes them from the streets of Paris to locations across Europe and the Middle East. On their journey to uncover the secrets of the Knights Templar, they must uncover mysteries and unravel conspiracies as they solve puzzles, gather clues, and interact with characters.
