British far-right movements begin four new protests after more than 90 arrests on Saturday

Aug. 4 () –

Far-right groups in Britain have launched four new protests across the country on Sunday, despite more than 90 arrests in 25 demonstrations the day before, which were called after a wave of misinformation wrongly identified the Welshman accused of stabbing two girls to death this week as an asylum seeker.

More than half of the arrests took place in the cities of Liverpool, Bristol, Hull and Blackpool, amid violent riots, acts of vandalism and attacks on security forces.

For this reason, the British Police Commissioner for Public Order, BJ Harrington, announced last night the deployment of almost 4,000 additional officers for the protests this Saturday to prevent new episodes of violence.

In addition, Crime Secretary Diana Johnson has warned that the country’s courts could remain open around the clock to ensure “thugs” “prowling our streets” are brought swiftly to justice, while law enforcement has measures in place to recruit additional officers to respond to further unrest.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has given police his “full backing” to take whatever action is necessary to respond to “extremists” trying to “spread hate” after scenes of disorder in England and Northern Ireland, but has expressed concern that officers could be overwhelmed when dealing with other crimes. The Police Federation has warned that “all this comes at a price.”
