Borrell urges Cuba to strengthen ties with the EU after the economic consequences of the invasion of Ukraine

From Havana, he defends support for Ukraine, “unreasonably attacked” by Russia, destabilizing world economies

May 26. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, has urged Cuba this Thursday to strengthen ties with Brussels, in the framework of the consequences generated after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“Our desire is to accompany Cuba in its process of opening economic and social reforms from a relationship of mutual respect to cooperate in improving the lives of all Cubans,” said Borrell, who recalled the holding of a dialogue on Human Rights that he hopes will take place “before the end of the year”.

Referring to this meeting, he considered that holding “this political and cooperation dialogue” will also strengthen bilateral relations, including political rights, trade and economic modernization policies. “Believe me, based on the strength of Europe’s economic presence on this island and our willingness to cooperate, we will continue to explore new ways to collaborate with Europe,” he declared from Havana.

The High Representative, who has referred to the world crisis caused by the war in Ukraine as a reason to improve ties with the European Union, has recognized that “Cuba is facing the particular chaos of energy, electricity and fuels in a particularly difficult situation”.

“Allow me to tell you that we would like the economic and political model of Europe, which is based on environmental sustainability, social equity and the development of individual capacities, to be a model that can interest the Cuban people,” he said. indicated.

Borrell has indicated that “unfortunately, we are now at the dawn of another global confrontation”: “And we do not want another Cold War.” “But we do want Ukraine, which is a free, sovereign and independent country to maintain its freedom, its sovereignty and its territorial integrity,” he added.

“For (the situation) to be better, it is necessary for the world to confront whoever has attacked a country, Ukraine, for no reason, destabilizing the economies of the entire world,” he concluded.
