June 24. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The High Representative of the European Union for Common Foreign and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, announced this Friday that he will travel to Iran during the day to address the possible reactivation of the 2015 nuclear agreement and has defended “diplomacy as the only way”.

“I am traveling to Iran, as coordinator of the nuclear agreement, to meet with my counterpart (Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein) Amirabdolahian and other relevant authorities,” he said on his Twitter account. “Diplomacy is the only way to return to the full implementation of the agreement and reverse the current tensions,” he explained.

Borrell’s office has specified that the visit will last until Saturday “as part of the efforts to return to the application of the nuclear agreement”, without the Iranian authorities having ruled for the moment on the displacement.

The Iranian authorities announced in early June that they had begun to inject gas into the new centrifuges installed as part of their nuclear program following a critical ruling by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Just a day earlier, Tehran notified the withdrawal of 27 security cameras, a decision criticized by the IAEA director general, Rafael Grossi.

Iran has announced the withdrawal of its commitments on several of the points of the 2015 nuclear agreement after the United States unilaterally left the pact in 2018, although the Iranian authorities have defended that these steps can be reversed if the United States withdraws the sanctions and returns to the agreement.
