Blizzard will require a phone number to play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II

Oct. 10 (Portaltic/EP) –

Blizzard has announced that to play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II it will be necessary to link a phone number to the Battle.net account, a requirement that follows the bumpy launch of Overwatch 2, the victim of two denial of service attacks on the same day of its release.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II will require a phone number to access the game when it becomes available on October 28, as part of the security measures that Blizzard has implemented related to the Battle.net account security.

This security system via SMS is the same that the developer has implemented in Overwatch 2 for new accounts and that you have extended to Call of Duty: Modern Warfarealso for newly created accounts, as reported in your Support page.

The purpose of this protection via SMS is to introduce an additional layer of security in the verification of accountsboth to protect a compromised account and to prevent a penalized violator from gaining access to yours.

Its extension to more games responds to the uneventful launch of Overwatch 2 on October 4, already as a free online multiplayer, and as the only installment to replace the original Overwatch. That day the players had problems accessing the game due to two denial of service attacks.
