MADRID 14 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The president of the United States, Joe Biden, will hold a meeting with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, in Lima (Peru), where the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC) is being held this week, in what will be his third and last meeting before the American leaves the White House.
“We hope that the president (Biden) will take the opportunity to take stock of efforts to responsibly manage competition over the past four years, of how the two countries have made progress in areas of shared interest, even amid deep differences and intense competition. “said senior US officials.
The meeting will take place on November 16 in the Peruvian capital and will be the third in person since the Democrat assumed the Presidency of the United States in 2021. During it, Biden will evaluate the progress made on issues as relevant to both powers as ” communications between military” and the fight against drug trafficking.
In addition, the US president is expected to convey to his Chinese counterpart “his deep concern about China’s support for Russia in the war against Ukraine, as well as the deployment of more than 10,000 North Korean soldiers in Russia.”
Stability in the Taiwan Strait, the Asian giant’s actions in the South China Sea, its “already” “unfair” trade policies and respect for Human Rights are other topics that the American will discuss.
Officials recalled that Biden and Xi “have known each other for more than a decade, when they were both vice presidents, and have spent many hours together in meetings.”
Likewise, they have highlighted that the American “has demonstrated that (his) two countries can and must manage their differences and prevent competition from leading to conflict or confrontation, keeping lines of communication open and promoting cooperation in areas of shared interest.”
Asked about the possible continuity of US policy towards China once the president-elect, the Republican Donald Trump, assumes the leadership of the White House, the officials did not want to express themselves, but they recalled that the new US Presidency “will have to find the way to manage a tough and complicated relationship.
