The Government of Australia announced this Tuesday the imposition of sanctions against three entities and five senior officials of Iran, including the Minister of Defense, Mohamad Reza Ashtiani, and the head of the Al Quds special forces of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, Esmail Qaani. .
This has been confirmed by the Australian Foreign Minister, Penny Wong, who has indicated that the sanctions seek to address the “destabilizing” activities promoted by Tehran in the Middle East. The list includes several senior officials, businessmen and companies that “have contributed to the development of Iranian missile and drone programs,” she explained.
“The spread of these technologies and their transfer to groups supported by Iran have led to the destabilization of the region,” Wong said in a statement from the Australian Foreign Ministry, which details that those sanctioned also include the director of the aeronautical company Iran Aircraft Manufacturing Industries, Mehdi Gogerdchian, and Iranian General Gholam Ali Rashi.
In addition, it has applied sanctions against the Naval Forces of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, which on May 13 seized a Portuguese-flagged cargo ship linked to an Israeli company while sailing through the Strait of Hormuz.
“This measure shows that the Government of (Anthony) Albanese has already sanctioned 90 individuals and a hundred entities linked to Iran in an attempt to show its commitment to confronting Tehran’s actions. This is in line with the measures put in place by the partners in recent weeks following the unprecedented missile and drone attack perpetrated in April against Israel,” the document states.
“Australia will continue to deliberately and strategically put pressure on Iran to achieve a cessation of its destabilizing activities and ensure that it adheres to International Law,” he concluded.
