The Reserve Bank of Australia has announced that the new design of the $5 bill will not include the current British king, Charles III, but another tribute yet to be defined with which the regulator wants to vindicate the Australian aborigines.
The death of Elizabeth II has triggered a design change in multiple areas, including currency. In the case of Australia, the deceased monarch will not be replaced by her son as the emblem of all banknotes, something that the Government also “supports”.
The Reserve Bank has reported in a statement that it will consult with the representatives of the aboriginal peoples on the new design, with a view to completing the process may take “several years.” Meanwhile, the design with the face of Elizabeth II will be maintained.
The death of the queen has revived the debate around the monarchy in several countries of the former colonial orbit. Australia has officially proclaimed Charles III as its king and the current prime minister, Anthony Albanese, despite his republican leanings, has ensured that regime change is not now the priority.
