The Government of Australia has announced on Monday the imposition of two packages of sanctions against a total of almost thirty people and fifteen Iranian entities.
The first package of sanctions — of a financial and travel nature — is aimed at 14 individuals and 14 companies that Canberra considers “responsible for abuses and egregious violations of human rights in Iran.”
Those sanctioned include four members of the so-called ‘Moral Police’, which was implicated in the death in custody of the young Kurdish-Iranian Mahsa Amini in September, a fact that was the trigger for the largest protests in the country’s recent history. .
Several high-level police, political and military figures have also been sanctioned, including some from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, who have been involved in the crackdown on protests following Amini’s death.
On the other hand, the second package of sanctions singles out thirteen individuals and one Iranian entity for their links to the production and supply of drones to Russia, since the Kremlin has used Iranian-made unmanned aerial vehicles in the war in Ukraine.
“Russia has used Iranian-made drones to attack Ukrainian civilians and civilian infrastructure. This list shows that there will be consequences for those who provide material support to Russia. Australia stands with the people of Iran and the people of Ukraine,” reads a statement from the Ministry of Australian Foreign.
