The governments of Australia, Canada and New Zealand have on Sunday underlined the leadership of US President Joe Biden, who has renounced presidential re-election in favour of the country’s vice president, Kamala Harris, who will have to gather the necessary support for the Democratic National Convention to be held in August.
“I have known President Biden for years. He is a great man and everything he does is guided by his love for his country. As President he is a partner to Canadians and a true friend. To the President and First Lady (Jill Biden): thank you,” Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau posted on his social media account X.
For his part, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese thanked Biden for his leadership and his efforts to make the alliance between the two countries “stronger than ever”, which has reinforced their commitment to “democratic values, international security, economic prosperity and climate action for this and future generations.”
New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has praised Biden’s lifelong “public service” as something that “deserves great respect.”
“I thank the President for his leadership of the United States and his commitment to New Zealand. And I look forward to working with him throughout the remainder of his presidency,” she added on her X account.
Japanese Chief of Staff Yoshimasa Hayashi has praised Biden’s work in strengthening Japan-U.S. relations and said he will continue to coordinate with the new U.S. administration “regardless of the election outcome,” Kyodo News reported.
The South Korean Prime Minister’s Office has reacted in a similar way, reaffirming its commitment to an alliance with any US government, although it has not commented directly on Biden’s resignation, South Korean news agency Yonhap reported.
