At least two dead and 40 injured during protests against the demolition of mosques in Ethiopia

May 28. (EUROPE PRESS) –

At least two people have died and more than 40 have been injured in clashes between the Police and Muslim protesters concentrated in the great Anuwar Mosque, in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.

Protests broke out on Friday after Muslim community prayer hours against the demolition of mosques in the town of Shaggar, in the former Oromia Special Zone.

Around a hundred people have been arrested in these protests.

The Oromia Regional State Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs denounced on May 23 that 19 mosques were illegally demolished in the city of Shaggar alone and urged the regional government to immediately stop the demolitions.

The institution had recently asked Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed for an end to the demolitions and a solution to the problem, according to the ‘Addis Standard’.
