July 18 (EUROPA PRESS) –
Tanzanian authorities have reported this Monday that the death of three people last week in the south of the country was caused by leptospirosis, a bacterial zoonotic disease, in southeastern Tanzania.
The disease is caused by a bacterium known as leptospira, as confirmed by the Minister of Health, Ummy Mwalimu, who has dispelled the doubts and fears of the population.
The bacteria passes from animals to humans when they come into contact with the urine of infected animals, according to information from the newspaper ‘The Citizen’. “It’s rare to pass from person to person,” he has said.
Thus, he explained that the disease is more common in tropical areas with high temperatures, especially in Central America, South America, Asia and Australia, where the carriers are often dogs or rodents.
Last week, the death of these three people caused chaos, especially in Lindi, after the president, Samia Suhulu Hassan, issued an alert for a mysterious illness.
These three people were among eleven who have been recently diagnosed with this disease, whose cases are increasing in the country.
