At least six dead and more than 60 missing in a shipwreck on Lake Kivu, in eastern DRC

At least six people have died, including three children, and 64 have disappeared in a shipwreck on Lake Kivu, located in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, on the border with Rwanda.

The administrator of the island of Idjwi, Mustafa Mamboleo, has confirmed that the sinking of the boat took place on Sunday night and that 80 survivors have been identified.

The fatalities are, for the moment, three children and three women, as the Radio Okapi station has learned.

According to information collected by the survivors, the boat had around 150 passengers on board. Local sources have indicated that the ship had just left Mugote, on the island of Idjwi (South Kivu), to go to Goma, the capital of the North Kivu province.
