At least 27 migrants have died this Thursday due to a shipwreck off the city of Sfax, in Tunisia, according to the country’s authorities, who have indicated that another 83 people have been rescued alive.

The director of Civil Protection of Sfax, Ziad al Sediri, has indicated in statements to the Tunisian radio station Mosaique that the shipwreck occurred only about three nautical miles (about 5.5 kilometers).

Thus, it has confirmed that at least five of the migrants rescued alive have had to be transferred to a hospital in Kerkennah, on the Querquenes Islands, located right in front of the aforementioned town, a common departure point for boats with migrants trying to arrive. to the Italian coasts.

Al Sediri has confirmed that all the migrants traveling on board the ship came from countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Currently, members of Civil Protection and the Coast Guard continue with search and rescue efforts. It is estimated that in total there were 110 people on board.
