At least 26 prisoners have died this year due to lack of resources in the Masisi prison in the DRC

June 10 (EUROPA PRESS) –

At least 26 prisoners have died since January 2023 as a result of a lack of food, medical care and other vital necessities, according to reports by civil society in Masisi in North Kivu, Democratic Republic of the Congo.

“Prisoners are dying of hunger and lack of medical care while the Congolese government allocates a sum equivalent to nine million Congolese francs — about 3,500 euros — every quarter to this Masisi prison. What is the purpose of the building for the dispensary that has never been used? The following recommendation should be noted: the immediate resumption of public hearings within the Masisi Peace Court”, has suggested the general rapporteur of Masisi civil society, Telephone Mitondeke.

“A hundred of the detainees of the central prison of Maisisi live in catastrophic humanitarian conditions,” said this structure in a statement to the Radio Okapi station on Friday.

Mitondeke added that “at least 107 detainees, including one convict, are in this central Masisi prison. Most of these residents cannot stand.”
