The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported on Wednesday that at least 15 people have died after a canoe with approximately 300 people on board sank off the coast of Mauritania.
At least 120 people have been rescued by the Mauritanian Coast Guard, although efforts to locate the missing are continuing. “Among the survivors, ten people were rushed to hospitals for medical care and four unaccompanied children were identified,” he added.
The boat left Gambia and was adrift for seven days until it capsized on Monday near the Mauritanian capital, Nouakchott. The sinking occurred in the context of the Atlantic migration route, the IOM said in a statement.
“We are working tirelessly to support the Government of Mauritania to provide the necessary assistance to those who have survived and to help locate missing persons,” said Boubacar Seybou, head of mission for the organisation in Mauritania.
