At least 15 dead and 19 missing after the sinking of a ship in Indonesia

July 24 (EUROPA PRESS) –

At least 15 people have died and 19 are missing after a ship carrying 40 passengers sank in Indonesia while returning from a birthday party.

“A boat has sunk in the bay of Mawangka Central, in the province of Buton Central. With a total of about 40 people on board, 15 have died, six have survived and 19 are in search,” said the head of the country’s rescue services (Basarnas Kendari), Muhamad Arafah, in statements collected by the newspaper ‘Kompas’ on Monday.

The authorities suspect that the ship was overloaded, which is why it capsized and eventually ended up sinking. Rescue services are still searching for the missing.
